thursday Q & A - indigestion remedies

Ann writes:

Do you have any cheaper remedies for indigestion, heartburn & nausea?

Actually, I do have a few that can be made with very simple and inexpensive ingredients.

My husband swears by his baking soda mixture for indigestion. To prepare, mix a teaspoon of baking soda into a small glass of water and add lemon or lime juice to taste.

For heartburn, many people find relief in yogurt. About a half a cup is enough to soothe most episodes.

My favorite nausea remedy is strong ginger tea. You can buy bulk ginger root as an herb in many health food stores or herbal shops. Make a strong tea and take it by the tablespoon for relief. Or, you can mix it into sparkling water and add some simple syrup to make a "ginger ale." To make simple syrup, dissolve 1 part sugar into 1 part hot water. Refrigerate to store.

As with any food items you plan to take for medicinal purposes, you should ask your doctor to be sure they are OK for your particular health situation. And always consult your OB if you are pregnant or nursing.
